CONWAY, AR. – Savannah Neal, ESO Program Manager at the Van Buren Chamber, has successfully completed Year 2 of the 40th Annual Community Development Institute (CDI) at the University of Central Arkansas.

Through a professional development scholarship made possible by a partnership with Arkansas Valley Electric Corp, Savannah participated in the nationally recognized training program that equips community leaders and economic development professionals with the knowledge and tools to strengthen local communities, set goals, encourage collaboration and partnerships with stakeholders, and build thriving communities.

The Community Development Institute is a three-year program consisting of one week of intensive training each year. Participants progress through the curriculum as a cohort, gaining practical strategies in community and economic development while building a  network of professionals dedicated to creating positive change.

During the second year of the program, Savannah expanded her knowledge in strategic planning, community engagement, leadership development, economic vitality, and regional community partnerships. She also gained practical tools for identifying community assets, fostering collaboration among stakeholders, and creating sustainable programs that support entrepreneurs, businesses, and residents.

"CDI has challenged me to think beyond individual programs and focus on the long-term impact of community development," said Savannah. "One of the biggest lessons I've learned so far is that meaningful progress happens when organizations, government officials, and community members work together toward a shared vision. I'm excited to bring new ideas, stronger partnerships, and innovative strategies back to the River Valley, to continue supporting our business community and helping Crawford County grow."

UCA is the birthplace for the Community Development Institute, which started in 1987 in partnership with Entergy, Southwestern Bell, and ARKLA. Since that time, CDIs have been established in Texas, Idaho, Alabama, Illinois, Delaware, and Louisianna. They are considered a national governing and certification body.

Savannah will return next year to complete the third and final year of the Community Development Institute, earning the option to sit for the Professional Community and Economic Developer certification exam.
